Show aquatic staff you value safety as much as they do

The Issue

Lifeguards and swim instructors not only save, but also enrich lives by making recreational swimming safe and enjoyable. No other area of recreation requires as many certifications for hiring or mandates as many hours of in-service trainings in order to be eligible to work.  Aquatics is unparalleled in this respect because the level of responsibility inherent in the job and the long-term consequences of failing to achieve the objectives of the job are unparalleled.  In harmonizing job descriptions and titles on behalf of the City of Toronto and CUPE Local 79 Part Time Workers Unit, a third party arbitrator undervalued the job knowledge, accountability, human relations and dexterity of lifeguards and swim instructors.  The ratings fail to reflect the specialized knowledge and ability of these skilled workers.  This undervaluation is reflected in their hourly wages. Considered part-time workers even when working ful-time hours, these indivuals have no benefits or sick days.  All they take home is the wage they earn when they work.  Sign this petition and show that you value safety as much as they do. Tell the City and the Union aquatic staff are worth more.
