Kwame Shakur started this petition to City of Terre Haute

The Booker T. Washington ( Hyte) Center was founded by and for the New Afrikan/black community. The city has appropriated it from us and used it for its own purposes. Our freedom and independence depends on the control of our own resources. We cannot allow our spaces to be taken from us!

The city and its officials have all the land and property in the city at their disposal for their offices and programs, the center is all We have to build upon. When COMMUNITY based organizations and athletic mentors are trying to rebuild Our COMMUNITY by establishing FREE political and socio-economic education classes, putting books back on the shelfs, hosting open gym nights, and Feed the People programs,We shouldnt be charged to utilize the classrooms, gym or soup kitchen. There has been a lack of leadership in the New Afrikan/Black Community for years, and now that individuals, organizations and business owners from this COMMUNITY have come together following the 2019 New Afrikan People’s Assembly We would hope that the mayor and others would encourage and support Our initiative to set forth a plan for Community Reconstruction and Social Development. We are not seeking any funds from the city, only FREE access to Our COMMUNITY Center.

We, the undersigned, demand:

The mayor grant COMMUNITY leaders/organizations FREE access to Our COMMUNITY CENTER.The center was created by members and leaders from the New Afrikan/Black COMMUNITY to serve the needs of Our people.
