We, the undersigned, say
That we call on the City of Swan to ban the use of Glyphosate (RoundUp) in all community areas in and around the City of Swan. Including, but not limited to, parks, verges, community areas, roadside and all other areas that Glyphosate is sprayed by councils.
This petition does not include any motion to limit it's use in commercial crops within the City of Swan.
This petition will be week raised at the City of Swan Ordinary Council Meeting by Jon Amery (local resident), as convener of the petition.
Why stop the use of Glyphosate?
Both locally and internationally, RoundUp is being stopped in community areas. The Town of Bassendean has recently maintained it's 5 year ban.
Sri Lanka and the Six Gulf States (Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, and Oman) and Malta have banned glyphosate. Many others are in the process of doing so. France has banned glyphosate in public parks immediately and will phase out the use of glyphosate herbicides in agriculture and landscaping use over the next 5 years completely.
We ask the City of Swan to ban it's use as well.
Glyphosate herbicides have also been found to be linked to various cancers specifically lymphoma, are endocrine disruptors, neurotoxic, and a cause of liver disease. Global studies show that we are routinely exposed to dangerous levels of glyphosate. Most residents in the City of Swan come in contact with glyphosate daily, as its is routinely sprayed on parks and roadside verges.
The announcement of glyphosate as a "probable carcinogen" by the highly regarded cancer-research wing of the World Health Organization (IARC) is but the latest of a growing number of scientific findings that exposes the health impacts of the herbicide--whether it be the development of carcinogens or the spread of antibiotic resistance in disease-causing bacteria.
The conclusions of the independently reviewed studies are clear: the wide and increasing use of glyphosates in our crops and public spaces is a hazard to our health.
Are there other options?
Yes. We are not being responsible for people if getting rid of weeds is more important than people’s health. I'm not going to include all the alternate options here.
Lot's of studies to read below. Please get behind and support this petition.
