Sandra Nemeth started this petition to City of Stonnington and

Stop councils' plans to use Wrights Terrace and Spring St as east-west connectors between Chatsworth Road to Williams Road!

These one-way residential streets are narrow and busy with many cars, cyclists, pedestrians, trucks and delivery drivers passing through every day. Originally lined with small worker's cottages, they were not designed for lots of traffic. The addition of a designated bike route would be unsafe due to the extra traffic and already tight thoroughfare that these streets provide. The amenity of the residents, many with young families, would also be compromised.

Since the covid lockdowns there have been more walkers or our streets with the footpaths being narrow and them often needing to walk on the street. There have been more food delivery drivers and there is lots of building taking place, so many large loads on trucks pass through the streets. It requires great caution on the street, getting in or out of cars or using a bike! The addition of a specially assigned bike route through these streets is not viable nor safe.

Council's letter to occupants states that "sharrows" will be introduced that "encourage the cyclist to use more of the lane where there is a potential danger (eg. from parked cars), but there is not enough room for a dedicated cycle lane." This statement acknowledges the lack of room for bikes and dangers this plan presents.

Possible other solutions are:

  • bike riders are encouraged to continue to use current routes on High St and Malvern Road
  • if cyclists do use Wrights Terrace or Spring St, to dismount and wheel their bike to the Williams Road lights and pedestrian crossing

Cyclists' safety and amenity (noted in council's letter) is important, but so is the residents' and ratepayers' safety and access to their neighbourhood, which council seems to have forgotten.

Ask our recently voted representatives at council to reconsider this plan.
