Bring Pride to the City of Spruce Grove

Historically, the City of Spruce Grove has never recognized or supported Pride Month. We want to see this City change its policies of neutrality on this subject and create a proclamation acknowledging the month of June as Pride Month. We would like the City to stand behind LGBTQ2 individuals to let them know they are supported and that homophobia and hate crimes against this population will not be tolerated in this community.
When residents of the community asked Spruce Grove City Council why Pride month has not been recognized, their response was “the City currently doesn’t single out any particular cause or group and chooses to be consistent by not doing anything versus selectively choosing causes or groups. With respect to raising a flag in honour of a particular group or awareness, the City’s current flag policy states that only flags representing the City of Spruce Grove, Province of Alberta and Nation of Canada will be flown on municipal flagpoles”. - Jennifer Hetherington, Manager of Corporate Communications for the City
We believe that it is inappropriate for the City to stand silent on this matter as homophobia and transphobia are highly prevalent in this community. It is important for the City to openly recognize and support Pride month to show that LGBTQ2 people are welcome and should feel safe here. "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." - Edmund Burke
"Did you know that suicide rates for LGBTQ2 youth in Canada are seven times higher than the national average? And that LGBTQ2 Indigenous youth are even higher? No one should have to hide who they are and who they love in order to feel safe." - Rachel Notley
