Why this petition matters

Started by Sandi Spaulding

The city of Sarnia is planning on demolishing the Cabin in Canatara and replacing it with a “replica”. To the best of our knowledge, the cabin is the oldest building in Lambton County.

The Heritage Log Cabin Group has received an estimate to repair the cabin and the cost is similar to the cost of a new building
The log cabin was built in 1830 in Goderich and moved  by water to Sarnia lakefront in 1930.  Maud Hanna’s daughter owned and lived in the cabin.   In 1932, during the Depression, Maud Hanna gave the city $10,000 to create Canatara Park.

In the 1970s the cabin was donated to the city by the Hay family and it was moved to Canatara Park where  it has been enjoyed by visitors for 50 years.   However, it has not been properly maintained by the City.

The removal of the heritage designation was submitted by the City of Sarnia at a council meeting so the building could be demolished.
The Heritage Log Cabin Group opposed that and appealed to the provincial level.   They withdrew the appeal based on assurance from city solicitor that they would be included with all interested parties to maintain the heritage value of the property.

DEMOLITION IS PLANNED!  Let City Hall know that the cabin is important.

DO NOT SEND A DONATION WHEN YOU SIGN THIS PETITION. The money goes to change.org and NOT TO THE LOG CABIN RESTORATION.
