Petition for direct access to the Westcreek x Copper Hill bridge

The city of Santa Clarita is planning to remove the crosswalk closest to the bridge at Copper Hill Dr. and Westcreek Dr. as a solution to “pedestrian safety" and "traffic flow" issues. We believe this solution has many flaws, including disregard to those with physical limitations, and most importantly, it does not respect the opinions of West Creek residents who are crossing Copper Hill daily. This can result in more people driving to the school from West Creek community and creating more traffic.
We are aware of drivers who would like to have better traffic flow and therefore wish for that crosswalk to be removed. But that solution ignores the larger picture — the fact that residents need a safer, more direct access to the bridge if we are going to be forced to use it. We understand the drivers' morning hour is precious, but so is the pedestrians'. Time does not always allow an extra 5-7 minutes to meander onto the bridge path. And safety is a major issue, as the only means of entering the bridge is by walking alongside speeding traffic.
As more people are moving in and starting to attend the school in the fall, traffic is already going to get worse. It is best if everyone from wcwh walk to the school, but it's just too far for many people. Many new homes are built farther from the school, and those people would be driving. We need to encourage more people to walk and at least not lose any current walkers.
If we are to be a walking neighborhood and expected to walk our kids to school, it is imperative that we have: 1.) safe access (kids walking right next to 55 mph traffic is not safe) and 2.) more direct access (such as stairs coming down to Westcreek Drive from top of the bridge or stairs connecting the other end of the bridge to WCA yard directly). If bridge access is addressed, we believe that will take care of the problem of too many pedestrians using the crosswalk during peak traffic hours.
City representatives said it is primarily a safety concern, not a traffic concern. If that is the case, simply removing the crosswalk and not addressing bridge access will not make it safer for pedestrians. It is also disrespectful to those living in West Creek and crossing Copper Hill daily while simply trying to walk our kids safely to school.
Hereby we are petitioning the City of Santa Clarita to:
1. Build direct access to the top of the bridge from Westcreek Dr. and/or direct access to WCA yard from the end of the bridge.
2. Not remove any crosswalk from the intersection of Copper Hill Dr. and Westcreek Dr. until direct access to the bridge is provided.
3. Conduct another traffic study months after direct path is built and assess the need for a crosswalk removal.
Please share this with your neighbors!!
