People's Alliance for Justice started this petition to City of San Diego

San Diego's historic balboa park landmark and tourist attraction the World Beat Center has been located in inspiration point of Balboa Park for over 30 years but has never properly been given a lease agreement from the City of San Diego making its future vulnerable at its current location in Balboa Park. The World Beat Center is the only cultural landmark of its kind in Balboa Park and led by the only longtime African American executive Director in Balboa Park Makeda Dread. Having a proper lease agreement with the City of San Diego is critical for the center's existence and it has never properly received a lease making the site vulnerable to big developers coming in and taking it from its long time location. In a recent news article they discussed how big developers are watching inspiration point in Balboa Park hard and looking for opportunities with the City on how to gain the properties at the beautiful forefront of Balboa Park. We want to ensure we seal at least the next 30 years's future of the World Beat Center at its long time location by securing a lease with the City of San Diego. The City of San Diego would put its tourist features of Balboa Park at risk if it lost the World Beat Center due to it being one of Balboa Park's major tourist attractions and would send the wrong message which President & Founder of People's Alliance for Justice Rev. Shane Harris shared in a statement "Black people and culture are not welcome in Balboa Park". Join us in petitioning the City of San Diego's real estate assets department, District three Council member Chris Ward, the full city council and Mayor Kevin Faulconer to secure a thirty-year lease with the city after they have waited thirty years on edge without an agreement with the City of San Diego. The World Beat Center has been serving as a community and cultural center in San Diego for over thirty years and has opened it's space to several community groups, organizations, concerts and events for free.
