Eye On Sacramento started this petition to City of Sacramento

The City of Sacramento plans to start deleting emails.  Email is the history of City actions and the source of information to the public under the Public Records Act.  Emails are public records and the citizens of Sacramento have a right to see them.  Act to stop the City of Sacramento from erasing your rights.

The City claims there will be high costs and a failure of the City's email system if these emails are not erased.  Reasonable people have many solutions to the City's email issues; these include a backup of emails, off of the system and archive storage of the data.  81 million emails can be stored on 4 to ten terabytes for about $650 in hardware.  Cost is not an issue.

The City of Sacramento has not been transparent.  The City has delayed and refused California Public Record Requests.  Now the City wants to delete emails back to 1999.  What is the City of Sacramento trying to hide?  Once the emails are destroyed, there will be no evidence ... the record will be purged.

Eye On Sacramento is a watchdog group of concerned citizens who work for integrity, transparency and effectiveness in Sacramento local government by educating the public and promoting the broad public interest.
