When I went to Open High school there were broken windows, no disability access and an utter lack of funding from the city. That was 25 years ago. How long will it take for this city to invest in its children?

Children's education should never be ngatively affected by the city's budget.

I am a proud product of the Richmond Public School system. It wasn't until high school that I noticed the rather deplorable conditions in not only my school's building, but others as well. Since graduating, I have both visited and worked in some of the schools as an employee, including the Norrell and Westhampton buildings. Witnessing the conditions of the Westhampton building some 12 years after I'd previously seen it revealed to me a sentiment of neglect and purposeful oversight. I pray that's not the case, but it is certainly what I saw and felt at the time. While there are arguments for and against a baseball stadium, or for a slave memorial, or for this or that, at the end of the day, the children suffer, because the conditions within many of these buildings (elementary, middle, and high schools across the board) are simply unacceptable.

My daughter is a junior at Open High School; plus (long ago, in the last century) I went to Ginter Park and Albert Hill schools!

Because I am tired of watching families fall in love with my neighborhood, buy and fix up old houses, put their children into City schools only to become so disillusioned by that experience that they pull their children out again, sell, and move to the counties. We are losing the kind of energetic people we need to make this city flourish.
