William Arana started this petition to City of Point Arena

We, the members of the community, petition the city of Point Arena to stop and abandon the Arena Cove Parking Lot Restoration Project.

The Arena Cove Parking Lot Restoration Project needs to be abandoned due to the environmental degradation of the surrounding waters, cliff and beach. The plan calls for more boulders to be laid around the lot’s perimeter. The original boulders, (rip rap) have shifted down the beach and into Arena Creek, which greatly restricts steelhead access! These boulders also block safe access to the water for surfing and beach launching during low tide. Currently, and as climate change progresses, an additional 2 foot wall will not stop rocks and sea water from inundating the parking lot. This project is a boondoggle, a waste of taxpayers’ money that will only create more problems.

WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT

  • Due to the project being declared as an emergency there has been no environmental impact assessment.
  • Parking lot repair is not an emergency. The parking lot is fully functional.
  • This project will restrict stream access for endangered steelhead salmonids. Rainbow Trout which can become steelhead are currently present in Arena creek.
  • None of the project plans show Arena Creek.
  • Views of the ocean will be restricted for those with disabilities.
  • Beach and water access will become more difficult and hazardous.
  • Large boulders shifted during storms can become potentially fatal hazards for beach goers.
  • The surf in Arena Cove will be negatively impacted from the addition of more rock.
  • Closing the parking lot for construction this summer will send tourists and their money to nearby areas. Our local business impacted by COVID-19 will suffer even more.
  • The project plan has no drive on beach access for emergency life saving services.
  • The proposed seawall bench will not function as a bench because the level of the beach legally can’t be altered. This means the rocks can pile up well above bench height or be eroded away creating a six foot ledge.
  • Seawalls reflect wave energy causing increased erosion to the surrounding areas.
  • The parking lot restoration project was not adequately presented to the community.
