Overdose prevention site desperately needed for Penticton

We are in the grips of an opioid crisis and our beautiful Penticton is not immune to the consequences of it. Unless we face these realities the problem will get worse and more people will die.

The most astounding part is that for having such an extremely high rate of overdose per capita in our city, we still do not have a safe space for people to use. Safe consumption sites are the best way to keep the people who use substances safe and healthy. These facilities are a great way to connect them with the resources they need to increase their well being and functionality of their lives.

Implementation of these sites also takes pressure off other agencies in town. Hospitals, ambulance services and walk in clinics are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to how an overdose prevention site can positively impact everyone in the community.

There are solutions to this crisis and it’s been proven that the old way of thinking: criminalizing and shaming is not working. Compassion, harm reduction and decriminalization will.  Please be part of the solution and encourage our city and interior health to prioritize an overdose prevention site.

Saving lives, no matter whose lives they are should be a priority to any community
