Petitioning City of Ottawa and Ottawa City Council

Declare support for the City of Ottawa becoming a Fair Trade City

Fair Trade Ottawa Équitable is a local umbrella organization of organizations, businesses and concerned individuals. Its primary goal is to have the City of Ottawa declared a Fair Trade Town, according to the criteria established by Fairtrade Canada.

According to the criteria of Fairtrade Canada, Ottawa must achieve six goals before it can be officially recognized as a Fair Trade Town. These goals are:

1. Support from the local political authority
2. Fair Trade Certified products available in stores and restaurants
3. Support of community groups: workplaces, faith groups and schools
4. Public support: media and the general public
5. Steering committee is convened
6. Ethical and sustainable consumption promoted

Goal #1 in this case refers to the City of Ottawa ('the City') and Ottawa City Council ('the Council'). This requires the Council to pass a motion to declare its support of Ottawa becoming a Fair Trade Town and instruct the City to follow suit by amending its Ethical Purchasing Policy to include Fairtrade certified products in its cafes and at city meetings, like coffee, tea, sugar, cocoa and bananas.

The goal of the petition is to help demonstrate to the City and the Council that there is widespread support from residents throughout Ottawa. This petition will be presented to the Council along with a handwritten one. As such, the petition is intended for Ottawa residents only who have not signed the paper petition. We greatly appreciate outside support, which can be shown by visiting our website, liking us on Facebook and following us on Twitter (see below for addresses).

Fair Trade Town campaigns have been instrumental in increasing the amount of Fair Trade products purchases and improving consumer awareness over the origin of common products. Over 1,000 towns across the globe have already achieved Fair Trade status, 15 of which are Canadian municipalities. As the national capital, Ottawa must show leadership both nationally and on the world stage in terms of supporting socially-responsible practices. Fair Trade status for the City of Ottawa will raise local, national and international awareness about trade practices and increase the demand for goods produced ethically and sustainably both in Canada and abroad. Letter to
City of Ottawa and Ottawa City Council
I just signed the following petition addressed to: City of Ottawa/Ottawa City Council.

Declare support for the City of Ottawa becoming a Fair Trade City

We, the undersigned, request the City of Ottawa and Ottawa City Council to take the following action:

Support the efforts of Fair Trade Ottawa Équitable to have the City of Ottawa declared a Fair Trade Town, according to the criteria established by Fairtrade Canada.

According to the criteria of Fairtrade Canada, Ottawa must achieve six goals before it can be officially recognized as a Fair Trade Town. These goals are:

1. Support from the local political authority
2. Fair Trade Certified products available in stores and restaurants
3. Support of community groups: workplaces, faith groups and schools
4. Public support: media and the general public
5. Steering committee is convened
6. Ethical and sustainable consumption promoted

As such, we call on the City of Ottawa to pass a motion to declare municipal support of Ottawa becoming a Fair Trade Town, thus helping Fair Trade Ottawa Équitable to achieve the first of these six goals. We also call on the City of Ottawa to amend its Ethical Purchasing Policy to increase the procurement of commonly-used Fair Trade goods as per other Fair Trade Towns.

We understand that this document will be considered a public document at the City of Ottawa and that information contained in it may be subject to the scrutiny of the City and other members of the general public.
