Ban plastic in the North Shore

Less than 11% of Canada’s plastics get recycled. The rest end up in our landfills, lakes, parks and oceans, destroying ecosystems and leaching toxic chemicals.

We can’t rely on businesses to “do the right thing” voluntarily, so long as making new plastic from fossil resources is cheap, the cost of collecting and recycling plastic is high, and dumping plastic into the environment is “free.”

We need to engage local governments and make businesses change for the better.

The City of Vancouver has already banned plastic straws. The North Shore should take a bigger step and ban all single-use plastic containers, plastic straws, styrofoam containers, plastic bags and plastic utensils, plastic wrapping (saran wrap) in restaurants and plastic bags in grocery stores.
