Ren Jones started this petition to City of North Charleston and

As a resident of North Boulevard, I have a vested interest in making my neighborhood a safer place for the many children and families who use the playground and J.V. Morris Tennis Center across the street from my house.

In recent years, North Boulevard has become known as a “cut-through” street. It is common for cars to speed past, sometimes at an estimated 50+ mph, with little concern for pedestrians who may be using the nearby tennis center and playground. The recreational amenities on North Boulevard are frequented by many as they are an affordable option for children and adults alike to have fun while staying active. Where some may have the luxury of visiting a theme park or joining a gym, not all North Charleston residents have financial means to do so. And with many children learning from home as a result of the ongoing pandemic, the playground now makes up for the lack of recess. Without the addition of speed bumps and sidewalks, I fear an accident involving a pedestrian—God forbid a child—and a vehicle is bound to happen.

Please join me in advocating for the following traffic safety measures:

1. Change the stoplight at Montague and Spruill Avenue in response to the increased traffic in the area.

2. Create a three-way stop at Marquis Road to better manage the flow of traffic.

3. Install a speed bump near the playground and tennis courts.

4. Add a sidewalk on the side of the street where the playground and tennis center sit.

Thank you so much for your signature and concern for the children in our community.
