Why this petition matters

Started by Marla Baker

The incident happened in November of 2019 where she was brought in a room and interrogated by her Dean without my consent after the school resource officer asked the Dean to conduct a search of my daughters belonging for Airpods serial numbers. My daughter called me crying hysterically after it was all over saying that they school was threatening she would go to jail and the police were going to come to her house and tell her mom. She was confused about the whole situation because as she stated to her Dean she taught they were hers. It was extremely frightening and she didn't understand why they were saying this and what she did wrong. I have tried everything possible to help my daughter get justice with the City of Naperville. The NAACP has tired to help her, State Officials and Community Leaders. The City insist on prosecuting her for something that happened two years ago and was resolved that day.  She graduated a year early and got into Spelman College but has not been able to attend in person because of this ongoing court case with the City of Naperville for the charge of theft.

The parents are not pursuing the charges or the school. The City of Naperville picked this case up. The City is prosecuting my daughter for theft. When she found out she had mixed hers up with the other young ladies the dean returned them to the other student. The school didn't suspend my daughter or issue any discipline for the issue. We got to the bottom of it and the situation was over. A month later the city brought charges against her for theft. I really need your help in bringing this story to the public. The same Deans that questioned my daughter were the same Deans that harshly questioned Corey Walgren. Their criminal interrogations cause traumatic emotional distress towards students mental stability and should be stopped. Amara was hospitalized from panic attacks for going back and forth to court for this case. She is studying to be a Veterinarian and has a 3.4 gpa. I am asking for you to help get justice for Amara by helping to tell her story, call the city and sign the petition to drop the charges.

This situation has introduced her to the justice system for no reason and gives her a flawed sense of our judicial system if convicted. As a single mom, you raise your children to be the best citizens they can be and your children try. If a city can bully her into pleading guilty as they have tried by telling her to just take the deal, she can and will lose hope in our system for good. She should be learning from the Great City of Naperville that hard work pays off.
