Neil Mcdavid started this petition to City of Morganton

I think its about time we honor those in our community who lived and died under slavery. There were hundreds if not thousands of slaves that lived in Burke County since the founding of this country. We should not let their lives and the tragedy of slavery be forgotten.

We should build a new memorial to those who lived under the tyranny of american slavery. It should commemorate their lives on a statue that represents the hardships they faced and the hard fought struggle for their freedom.

Our community should not be fighting about our differences but instead coming tougher for a common purpose. We will not resolve the differences in our culture by taring it down. Fear, anger, and hate should not be the motivation behind the discussion about how our history is represented.

Only by coming together and acknowledging the mistakes of the past will we be able build a better society.

This is an excerpt from a post i read on LTBC from a man named Tom Dula and is the reason i started this petition.

"I say that we, as a community, should start a campaign to raise funds for a fitting memorial for our African American ancestors of Burke County to be erected on the old courthouse lawn. It should have a place of honor along with the soldier standing guard.

We cannot change history, we cannot hide from it either. We can learn from it a grow together as a community. All it takes is understanding, love and respect for each other"
