A statue like this one is erected to honor an individual and take pride in that person's actions. General Custer was the opposite of heroic in the violence and genocide he brought on the Indigenous People of the West. This should not be honored and celebrated. The people of Monroe should not take pride in it . As well, it's presence is an ongoing reminder to the indigenous people who live in this area of a painful past where many viewed them as less than human and inferior. It is a reminder that many still view them as inferior and less important than themselves.

Ojibwe language, sadly, still isn’t required, daily teaching in all Michigan preK-12 schools.

Our foods have been reduced to frybread and cobblers - and obesity.

This statue is LONG OVERDUE to be removed and melted down. He was a prejudice murder of Indigenous men women and children and should never have been memorialized.

This is an obvious sick and sad symbol of a despicable past. There is no need for this in-your-face symbol to be there as I'm sure the people that put this up in the first place supported such gross atrocities. It should have never been put up in the first place... ...

This man was a murdering racist! Why would you want a coward who slaughtered women and children and old people in your town square? Ugh.

I feel what he did against the natives is horrible he shouldn’t have a statue in his honor for all the evil he did
