Lights up for Safety - Traffic Lights for Dangerous Intersection

On Tuesday, October 8th, 2019, my sister, brother-in-law and two nephews (ages 15 months and 3 years old) were walking home from daycare pick up at Viola Desmond Public School in Milton, Ontario. They crossed the street at the intersection of Leger Way and Etheridge Avenue (a noted school zone). There was a 4-way stop sign installed earlier that same day at the intersection, meaning all vehicles have to stop before proceeding through the intersection.

Unfortunately, my family was not so lucky. As they entered the intersection to cross the street, they were hit by a car which failed to stop at the stop-sign. My brother-in-law was thrown into the air and crashed into the windshield, causing the glass to shatter and lodge into his skin in multiple locations. The impact also launched my nephews out of the small wagon they were being transported in, sending them across the road.

All three are now on a long road to recovery, with an uncertain future due to the injuries sustained by this horrible accident. We do not want anyone else to have to go through what our family is now struggling to come to terms with; our lives have been turned upside down.

Given that this intersection is used by students (grades K to 8), who walk to the school on a daily basis (without any crossing guards) we believe the installation of traffic lights with walk signals would be in the best interest of the community.

Please help us spread awareness, and encourage the safety of all the families in our community to be put first. Please sign our petition in support of the installation of traffic lights at Leger Way and Etheridge Avenue.

Thank you for your support.
