Kingston is located on the historical territory of the Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabe Peoples. Most notably, the Peacemaker (Deganawida) was born in Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory. He was born at a time when there was great war and social unrest among the different nations. He taught people about the good mind - peaceful, just and able to reason, and how individual minds matter to the collective good.  He spoke of restoration and the structural elements required for collective participation and formed the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, "the oldest living participatory democracy on the planet" (PBS.org). This legacy and teachings can provide a model for peace and justice today.

Sir John A. MacDonald was a key figure in the genocide of Indigenous peoples and architect of the residential schools, forced relocations and starvation policies to kill Indigenous people to make way for Canadian expansion. He also charged Louis Riel with treason using an obscure British law, which carried the death penalty, thus ordering his execution.

The time to celebrate the architects of genocide and racism has passed. It is time to recognize the leaders of peace and justice.
