Rikki James started this petition to City of Joplin

The residents of North Heights neighborhood here in Joplin have been diligently trying to clean up our neighborhood both physically and financially.

Several homeowners in North Heights are concerned with the number of houses in the neighborhood that are declining to the point of decay. These are homes that do not meet current building codes and many of them are so bad they should be condemned. These are often homes owned by someone outside of the neighborhood who have little to no interest in updating their revenue stream of a rental property nor do they care about the decling property values as they will continue to charge rent to helpless tenants regardless of its value. This poses a threat to the entire community. These properties are more than just an eyesore. They are bringing the property values down despite efforts to maintain and improve nice homes in a historic neighborhood.

These properties are also dangerous on many levels. The properties that are not rented out often have squatters residing in them. These are strangers that come and go as they please not neighbors that care about the community and its people. Of the properties that are rented the landlords do not perform due diligence to keep out people that bring in more strangers and often criminal activities.

We as a community are not being allowed the simple pleasures of being a part of a community. Many of us do not feel we are able to walk our sidewalks or even let our children play outside in our own yards for fear of the extra people in our neighborhood that do not reside here.

All of this could be greatly improved if not completely resolved simply by the City of Joplin enforcing current building codes and holding landlords accountable for upkeep of their properties. If the City continues to ignore these problems the crime rate will continue to grow in this neighborhood and others. A growing crime rate combined with declining property values decreases the ability to promote this area a viable place to live.

Please join us in this petition to hold the landlords accountable for upkeep to their properties in the same way we all should be held accountable.
