Stop Signs on Hardy and Elysian St.
Stop Signs on Hardy and Elysian St.
The purpose of this petition is to get stop signs installed on Hardy Street and Elysian Street between 610 and Collingsworth Street. Large gaps between existing stop lights directly after two highway off-ramps allow passenger vehicles and semi-trucks to attain high speeds in both directions. The uninterrupted distances have led to numerous illegal street races. These neighborhood streets have become extremely unsafe for the children who attend school on these streets, the residents, pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers.
On August 9th, 2021, a driver traveling well above the posted speed limit lost control and caused a major accident on Hardy Street. The vehicle left the road and rolled through two yards before colliding with a pair of Trees that prevented the car from hitting the residential home. This incident caused major property damage and could have caused death to not only the driver but also the homeowners who were inside their homes at time of the accident.
In March 2020 a driver traveling above the posted speed limit lost control at the intersection of Elysian Street and Cavalcade Street. This driver impacted a telephone pole and was killed.
Pets on both streets have been hit and killed recently. Additionally, there are major bike lanes and bus stops on both of these streets. There have been minor incidents with cars pulling into the bike lanes that have the potential to become fatal.
We propose that stop signs be put at the following intersections to prevent vehicles from being able to reach high speeds and discourage any street-racing on these straight aways in our neighborhood.
1. The intersection of Hardy Street and English Street
2.The intersection of Hardy Street and Amundsen Street
3. The intersection of Hardy Street and Finch Street
4.The intersection of Elysian Street and Hay Street
5. The intersection of Elysian Street and Egypt Street
6.The intersection of Elysian Street and English Street
Both streets are one way so only one additional stop sign would be needed at each intersection making them each a three-way stop. Intersections number three and five are adjacent to a park and schools where children play. Intersection number one could have prevented the major accident that occurred on August 9th, 2021. The other three intersections are in places that are far away from any red lights where high speeds are observed in our neighborhood.
