Hope for Sudbury started this petition to City of Greater sudbury and

The right to shelter, to have one’s own bed to sleep in, a roof over their head and a place to eat a meal is a human right. Adequate housing is essential to the preservation of an individual’s dignity and health. Without a place to live, it is impossible to get and keep employment, recover from illnesses and maintain a sense of place in the world. Hope for Sudbury has been working with other local organizations to build a community of support and care for vulnerable individuals in our city, providing our guests with a place to sleep, food to eat and the services that they need to get back on their feet.

Given the depth of need in the City of Greater Sudbury, we are reaching out for funding and support on a grander scale of communities and industries so that we can continue our successful operations for our guests in a more suitable location. A contribution by the citizens and organizations would be deeply appreciated by all our current residents and devoted volunteers. It would ensure that we can still provide the vital structure and services that our guests evidently depend on. As a valued member of our society and the world wide web, we hope that you will sponsor our initiative, and help us to supply our city’s most vulnerable.

Hope for Sudbury was started in response to the dire need for shelter and access to immediate and transitional care to meet the basic and essential necessities for our street Samaritans. While the Government of Ontario provides some benefits, including Ontario Works (OW) and Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP), these are inadequate to meet the needs of most, as demonstrated below.

If eligible, you can receive:

$733 for basic needs and shelter from Ontario Works;

$1,169 for basic needs and shelter from Ontario Disability Support Program

City of Greater Sudbury market summary of Median Rent showed a 1 bedroom and 2 bedroom costs $1,050 & $1,500, respectively.

At Hope for Sudbury, we believe in collaboration with existing agencies and have established partnerships with Blue Door Soup Kitchen and Elgin Street Mission in order to supply our guests with two to three square meals per day. We also benefit from our generous grocery donations from local stores and citizens.

Additionally, our city’s homeless issue overlaps with a severe mental health crisis. One in five Ontarians will experience a mental illness in their lifetime; unfortunately, due to inadequate support structures, many of those suffering from mental illness do not get the support that they require, and often experience homelessness as a result. Hope for Sudbury works respectively with the agencies in place and other organizations in order to meet the physical and mental health needs of our guests.

The success of our people is verification that our improved methods of transitional care is both essential and revolutionary. We cannot continue to provide these services without the help of our city and its members. Strictly volunteer-based, our mission and initiative are to bring positive change in our community and, as such, we will need the support of its finest citizens and industries. We ask that you kindly contribute to Hope for Sudbury and help us make the difference that is vital to the economic growth and prosperity of our beautiful municipality.
