More on this petition:
Organisations representing over 1000 people have asked Geelong City Council to retain our Former Post Office in Ryrie St. as a community asset, showcasing Geelong as a Clever and Creative City. With some publicity through the Advertiser, Bay FM, ABC 774 Drive, the Independent, and quite a few Facebook posts (thanks to all), the petition now has 1000 signatures - but we need more. The Council is likely to make a decision on whether to call for Expressions of Interest to tender for the Post Office at its meeting on 27 August. We now have just a few days to build support further, so keep talking about the benefits of having Council hold off selling and start talking about a Business Case for its community use! The Post Office is a landmark historic building in our Arts and Culture Precinct. It could be adapted for: a Social History Museum - caring interest groups have our city’s history locked away in shipping containers waiting for a home; a Design Centre to celebrate Geelong as Australia's UNESCO City of Design; a Childrens' Museum, Visitor information, Community workshop spaces. All would be educational resources available for schools and Higher Education. The council's Former Post Office Conservation Management Plan 2019 found the building sturdy and adaptable to modern needs. There are Government Heritage and Regional Development grants available for such projects. Income from leasing the first floor and some Design Centre space would support it. Having some volunteer staff would reduce running costs. Dollars spent now to conserve the Post Office, preserve important historic material, and display Geelong's creative designs would add to community pride and create another tourism drawcard close to the CBD, in the heart of the arts precinct. See the petition's 'News and Discussion' section for some of the signers' comments on keeping the Post Office for the community. Let Geelong City Council know now that you want the Former Post Office to stay in public hands to best serve all of our community and visitors. Please add your name today!
