ENPS - Safe Bike Paths

The Eaglehawk community has a proud cycling history from Mulga Bill to Frank McCaig. Our school continues to support this tradition with our Energy Breakthrough Program, our school BMX track and this year, through Ride2School.

Throughout 2019, students at Eaglehawk North have been working hard to actively commute to school. This has been in the form of riding a bike, scooter or by walking to school.

Over the past 40 years the number of children who are physically active everyday has significantly dropped. In the 1970s, eight out of ten students rode or walked to school but today that number has dropped to just two out of ten.

Students who ride or walk to school contribute to their minimum physical activity level of 60 minutes per day. They are also more focused and ready to learn compared to those who are driven.

These factors alone are reason enough to support students coming to school in an active way. However, there is another reason for our school to support the initiative. Eaglehawk North is positioned between two major roads and has a distinct lack of safe travel paths. We also rely on a ‘drive through pickup’ system, which at different times, comes under a lot of pressure.

By encouraging students to actively travel to and from school, we ease the pressure on our drop off system and ease congestion on major roads. However, without a safe path for students and parents to access, this becomes more difficult.

To support active travel and to raise awareness of the need for safer pathways to school, the ENPS community organised four Ride, Scoot or Walk to school mornings throughout October. These days we’re well supported by students, parents, grandparents and teachers alike with over 160 people, half the school population, actively travelling together on these days.

As a Gold classified Ride2School school, we look forward to continuing to build support and awareness for active travel by working with different user groups including local council members and Bicycle Network Australia.
