Natalie Hockamier started this petition to City of Grand Rapids

In April 2021, the City of Grand Rapids announced plans in an MLive article to stop using synthetic pesticides and fertilizers at 6th St and Canal parks in effort to protect the Grand River. Last fall, the environmental non-profit Midwest Grows Green conducted soil tests and compiled a three-year management plan to transition the turfgrass parks away from chemicals using a natural approach. However, the city discontinued the organic program after only a few months.

Synthetic lawn pesticides and fertilizers pose negative risks to human health and the environment. Many cities across the country have improved health outcomes for their residents, pets and wildlife by successfully adopting organic practices in their parks.  The city of Grand Rapids deserves no less.

This petition asks the City Mayor and Commissioners to restart the natural lawn care program at 6th St and Canal parks so they can reaffirm their commitment to restoring the Grand River, protecting pollinators and maintaining safe and healthy parks for all.

I am a citizen of Grand Rapids who has had a deep love for plants, animals and the environment since childhood.  In the past few years a small group of fellow volunteers/friends and I have been working on educating the public about safe lawn care and also getting changes made on a larger scale.  Please sign today!
