Save Woongoolba Pool

I have heard from dozens of concerned Division 1 residents who are worried about the future of the Woongoolba Aquatic Centre.

After making my own enquiries, I understand it is the Gold Coast council’s intent to close the pool once the new Pimpama Sports Hub opens.

That's why I've created a community petition to save Woongoolba Aquatic Centre.

While I applaud the massive investment in this new $80 million facility, I can't help but feel like the locals of Alberton, Woongoolba, Cabbage Tree Point and Jacobs Well have been poorly communicated and consulted with on the matter. The Woongoolba Aquatic Centre has - and I believe still is - an incredibly important part of this community. I have fond memories of learning to swim there when I was a child growing up in Alberton.

While I appreciate council’s comments that there will be five new pools at Pimpama Sports Hub located 20 minutes up the road, this misses what I believe is the community’s concern - we are losing an important local asset that brings our community - and especially children - together.

If elected, I make the commitment to you all that I will ask council to make the full details for there reasoning behind shutting Woongoolba Aquatic Centre public. You deserve to have all the information, including attendance figures to the pool and the cost of any proposed upgrades.

I would like to propose that one of the five new pools could have been directed to upgrade of Woongoolba pool. If you agree, please comment below. I can't promise the pool will be saved, but let’s work together to try and keep it open.

Our community and sporting groups help people keep fit, healthy and socially connected. If elected, I will ensure Woongoolba Aquatic Centre and many other local sport and community groups get the support from council they deserve.
