Why this petition matters

Started by Stacy Everett

Dear Residents,

The  PPOA Board of Directors voted to send the following letter to the City of Galveston Planning Commission regarding the zoning change for West Isle Presbyterian Church.

Please read and sign the Petition in support for a resolution.

Dear Planning Commission Members:

This message is regarding the request of the West Isle Presbyterian Church for a zoning change of its property on Stewart Road from R-1 to RES/REC, ostensibly solely for the purpose of allowing it to maintain a sign more than 5% larger than the current one.

The Board of Pirates Property Owners Association represents 1,800 homeowners located very near the Church to the east and north.  The PPOA Board met on June 11, 2022, and voted to express opposition to this requested change.

This opposition is not to the Church, nor to its desire for a bigger sign, but because no one can guarantee that the Church will always occupy the land in question.  In the hands of a new owner the RES/REC zoning classification would allow many inappropriate uses for that land so near to the residential properties located in the Pirates neighborhood.

The PPOA Community requests that unless the Church can offer alternative, and less dangerous, options to allow the new sign, the Planning Commission and City Council should reject the requested zoning change.

Thank you for your consideration of our position.

Very truly yours,

Lee Slataper, President

Pirates Property Owners Association
