Reroute water to prevent additional flood fatalities

On Sunday, November 5, 2017, heavy rain, strong winds, & thunderstorms swept across the Erie area. As the rain fell in excess of 3’’, several feet of water backed up on East 30th & Florida Streets. As a result, the basement collapsed at 504 E. 30th Street & brothers-in-law Gary Hoffman & Michael MacGurn tragically passed away.
For the last 30 years, residents living near East 30th & Florida Streets have raised issues of the storm water drainage (or lack thereof), yet the City of Erie has done nothing to fix the problem. Fortunately, the Hoffman household was cleaned out & reconstructed, thanks to donations from local business leaders & community members; however, if the problem is not addressed, these efforts could potentially be destroyed. In addition to the loss of her spouse, Gary Hoffman’s widow is left to pay a mortgage on a house she is not comfortable living in for fear the basement could collapse again.
Nearly 8 months after flood water took the life of two men, another storm hit the area on Saturday, June 23, 2018 dropping ½’’ of rain but still resulting in flooding of that street corner (https://www.yourerie.com/ news/local-news/flooding- still-a-problem-on-east-30th- and-florida-avenue-a-year- after-two-men-s-deaths/ 1262357935).
Has the City of Erie surveyed the area to see how to improve the storm drains? How many flood fatalities need to occur before our local government does something? In an effort to bring light to the public & the City, please consider signing – we are reaching for at least 100,000 signatures within 30 days which would require a response from the City!
