Petition to Improve Pedestrian Safety at Cardiff Sports Park

Cardiff Sports Park, located on the east side of Lake Drive, lacks a pedestrian-friendly crossing from the sidewalk on the west side of the street. Community members who enjoy walking to the park have to cross the street mid-block. Cars do not stop or slow down for pedestrians. At times, it can be a challenge to find a break in traffic to safely cross the street.
According to Rob Blough, Traffic Engineer for the City of Encinitas, approximately 6,000 vehicles travel on Lake Drive each day. Mr. Blough has indicated that this particular area would likely be a good location for a pedestrian crossing system with flashing lights and a heavily marked crosswalk, similar to the system in place near the YMCA on Saxony Road in Encinitas.
As neighborhood residents, parents, caregivers, and community members, we are asking the City of Encinitas to: study the feasibility of installing a safe crossing system on Lake Drive near Cardiff Sports Park, to put the project on a future agenda, and ultimately to fund and complete the project. We believe this project will increase pedestrian safety at Cardiff Sports Park and ultimately make Encinitas a more pedestrian friendly city. Thank you for your consideration!
