Diwali is the festival of lights celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs & Jains across the world.

The festival takes place on one day between October & November with the date varying each year.

“The word Diwali comes from the Sanskrit word deepavali, meaning "rows of lighted lamps".

Houses, shops and public places are decorated with small oil lamps called diyas. People also enjoy fireworks and sweets too, so it's really popular with children.”

With an already growing population of the South Asian descent, we are asking the City of Edmonton to recognize, spread awareness and joy about this festival of positivity and lights, as for many individuals of above mentioned faiths, it is one of the most important and auspicious times of the year.

This Festival of Lights and positivity is often celebrated with a display of beautiful and magical fireworks, so we as a collective are requesting the City to allow one day of celebrations with displays of fireworks.

With Canada being one of the most multicultural countries, we encourage a growing city like Edmonton to become part of something filled with positivity, lights and prosperity!
