Felicity Ap-R started this petition to City of Edinburgh Council and

It’s a pandemic and the weather is improving; people can only meet outside. The community of Edinburgh deserves a clean and safe space to enjoy their summer, but the Meadows has descended into appalling conditions.

The park has been covered in litter after every sunny day this past month, leaving kind community members to take time out of their day to clear it up. Toilet facilities are seriously lacking so public urination and defecation has been rife. The newspapers are smattered with stories of assault and antisocial behaviour.

I’m calling Edinburgh City Council to take real ACTION on this issue, as these problems could be easily reduced by adding accessible facilities.

Public spaces require public facilities. The council has a responsibility to enforce environmental responsibility and provide these facilities.

I’m calling for these 5 simple measures to be introduced:

1. Temporary toilets on both sides of the Meadows and the Bruntsfield Links.

2. Signage to the 3 public toilets around the Meadows, and for these to be open 24/7 with basic hygiene supplies provided.

3. More bins (large if possible, located on the 8 walkways & in middle of sections where sports aren’t played). Littering would be greatly reduced if bins were a) in sight, b) more accessible to people who are intoxicated/unable to walk long distances, and c) not overflowing.

4. Set fines/repercussions for any individual/group caught littering.

5. Increased first aid teams at peak times in an attempt to make the public feel safer. Youth fights are often unavoidable but looking after victims is a good first step to a safer community.

The community of Edinburgh are tired of the disgraceful conditions in the Meadows and deserve immediate action.

These are 5 simple measures that will only be most necessary during the summer months and will ensure a cleaner, more eco-friendly, and safer public space for all to enjoy their summer in the fresh air.
