Mask Up Destin
Mask Up Destin
In late 2019 to early 2020, the word "coronavirus" started to float around. But, everyone said, "It's only in China, don't worry." So, we didn't worry. Then, it started to appear in the United States. On March 13th, 2020 it was declared that the COVID-19 outbreak in the United States constitutes a national emergency. Many of us considered ourselves immune to the virus, because we are young. But then, the numbers started rising. Toilet paper was vanishing. Businesses began to close. The world began to change. New York City was the hotspot. COVID-19 seemed to barely touch Destin. Yet, we were still precautious. We wore masks everywhere.
After months of being in lockdown and quarantine, everyone believed that most of Florida was finished with COVID-19. After all, it did not affect Destin as much as other cities, right? In late May, things began to reopen in Florida. Most of Destin believes that COVID-19 will not touch them. Yes, you may survive. But will your loved ones? Also, these symptoms are no joke. Are you really that confident in your body’s ability to fight this virus? Why is it even worth the risk? After reopening, the numbers in Florida began to rise...again. This time, it's worse. On June 27th, Florida set a record of 9,585 new positive COVID-19 cases! One month earlier, on May 27th, there was only 379 new positive cases. You would think we would take more precautions, but no we don't. I go to the grocery store and look around, barely anyone is wearing a mask. I can go anywhere in Destin without a mask, and yet the numbers keep rising. Face masks are proven to reduce the spread of COVID-19, so why is it not required in Destin to wear them inside businesses? Destin City Council should not ignore COVID-19 and should mandate a requirement for everyone in Destin to wear a mask when going inside in a public area. Behind every number is someone's life. Public areas include stores, restaurants, and other businesses. If someone does not have a mask or face covering on, they should not be allowed entry. When going to a restaurant, customers should have their mask/ face covering on until they get seated at their table. If they get up from their seat, they should put the mask back on. Wearing a mask is an extra precaution that slows the spread of the virus and still allows businesses to be open. Why not take an extra step to be safe? We want to protect our loved ones as much as possible and help keep our local businesses open. We, need to get the City of Destin to make masks/ face coverings a mandatory requirement. If we continue to not mandate wearing masks/ face coverings, the numbers will just continue to rise. We will go back to lockdown and back to how everything was in April. The best way to avoid this is to sign this petition and attempt to get Mayor Gary Jarvis to take action. We want our local businesses to stay open, and the safest way to do this is to wear a mask. So, help me and the City of Destin - let's #MaskUpDestin (please share this petition with the hashtag on social media)!
