Allow cheerleaders to earn PE credits
We cheerleaders work hard to cheer on our sports teams, but we aren’t able to get any credits. As of 2016 the International Olympic Committee has designated cheerleading as a sport and assigned a national governing body (a sports organization that has a regulatory or sanctioning function), also 31 out of 50 states including Colorado have recognized cheer as a sport in the school year of 2018-19(https://www.edurisksolutions.org 11/10.)
Sciencedaily.com also did a report about cheerleading and safe high school sports and has argued that “Colorado considers it a sport. Comstock said that likely means cheerleaders are safer in Colorado than in other states… "As athletes, cheerleaders should have access to the same safety standards as any other sport," said Currie…”(sciencedaily.com, 11/10). What Sicencedaily.com is arguing is that in colorado cheerleading is a sport and should mean the safety requirements of other sports, and with that many can argue that cheerleading should also get the credit that comes with playing a sport.
In San Diego, CA Cheerleaders from Patrick Henry High School petition cheer as a sport as well and the co-cheer captain, Haylie Szabo, made the argument that “This should be a class and we should get PE credit. We are lifting girls in the air and running and tumbling and doing stuff that is just as physical as some sports.”(https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com 11/10).
We demand that the DPS board and school directors give cheerleaders the respect and recognition they deserver along with their PE credits.
