Save Our Historic Charm

At 5,000 signatures, this petition is more likely to get picked up by local news!

As a fellow business owner in Downtown DeLand, news of the recent enforcement of a 1999 ordinance  banning rooftop signs has spurred more commentary than imaginable.

Mitchells Cleaners has been in business for nearly 50 years with their original sign still standing on the roof. According to an ordinance passed in 1999 (25+ years after their sign was installed), rooftop signs are illegal. At the time there was conversation of whether they should be grandfathered in, then according to the city, the recession hit so they chose to not enforce it and extend the deadline.

Fast forward to later this year in 2019 where the owners received a visit from City officials advising if they did not take action to remove their sign they would start implementing daily fines for code enforcement violations.

We are asking for your support of this petition, not only for Mitchell’s Cleaners, but to preserve the historic nature of their sign and the small town vibe we all know and love.

By signing, you are agreeing to have a vote towards the City of DeLand to ask that Mitchell’s Cleaners and all other businesses with signs up prior to 1999, to be “grandfathered” in for their current historic signs.
