Get DART to Install Cellular Service at Cityplace/Uptown Station for Rider Safety

(Dallas Area Rapid Transit) or DART's Cityplace/Uptown train station, located below Central Expressway, between Lemon Ave and Haskell Ave., is a large, heavily trafficked and important commute point in Dallas’ light rail transit system. Above ground, the station provides immediate access to DART bus connections and the Uptown Trolley network. However, below ground, riders lose all access to any cellular service and WiFi making the underground station a potential nightmare for medical emergencies and victims of criminal activity.
Since the station is 120 feet below street level, it takes commuters a great deal of time to climb stairs, ride escalators and/or wait for elevators to reach the trains or street level. From de-boarding a train, to finally exiting at street level where wireless service is once again available, can take riders up to 15 minutes. For the thousands of passengers using this station, this is a big liability to the city. In fact, the City of Dallas is risking millions of dollars in potential lawsuits by not providing wireless service to its riders at this station.
We are asking that a committee be appointed to study the need, safety impact to riders and the cost of installation for cellular service and possibly provide WiFi as well. This solution will offer greater access to 911 emergency calls, ability for riders to communicate with their friends and family, and provide overall better connectivity for phone, text and Internet.
