City of Cockburn takes on food truck favourites to restrict ‘unhealthy’ foods sold at events.

Events in Perth’s south are in danger of becoming a soft-drink and ice-cream free zone after a local council launched a crackdown on ‘red light’ foods.

A report in The West Australian reveals the City of Cockburn wants to dictate what food is sold from food trucks at events within its boundaries. Hot chips, meat pies and sprinkles are all in the firing line.

The city’s new policy borrows heavily from the ‘traffic light’ system used at school canteens across the state, with green the healthiest and red the highest in fat, salt or sugar.

The plan attempts to limit red light items to 30 per cent of what is on offer.

City of Cockburn environmental health manager Nick Jones defended the approach, and said that 79 per cent of adults in Cockburn were either overweight or obese.

But the WA Mobile Food Vendors Association have spoken out against the draconian nature of the new policy.

“Who is the council to tell me what I should be serving and to tell people what they should be eating?” WAMFVA president Craig Mauger said

The City of Cockburn are holding a council meeting this Thursday the 8th of August at 7.00pm at Colleville Cres Spearwood.

Please sign this petition and come down on Thursday night and have your say.
