Save The Huis Der Nederlanden/ SASNEV

This petition had 363 supporters

2 years ago, we came in support of the Dutch Library and Huis der Nederlanden, when an application for rezoning was published.

We were privileged to be part of the Pinelands community coming together. Subsequently, the application was withdrawn.

Another application has again been published to demolish the Hius der Nederlanden and build a mix office/retail/flats building, which would violate the intention of what the Huis van der Nederlanden stands for and which origin’s lie in the last will and testament of the mining magnate Ebel Hero Ebels (1897 – 1976), a Dutchman who, for almost 60 years, lived and worked and eventually died in South Africa.

The seedling from which SASNEV would grow was the Willem de Zwijger Foundation (WdZ), which had come into being on the death of Ebels in Johannesburg in November 1976 – as he had determined in his will and to which end he had bequeathed almost his entire estate. The focus of SASNEV’s operations are thus determined by the convictions and beliefs held by this Dutchman, who, along with his student friends, early in the 20th century supported the ideals of what was called the Groot Nederlandse Gedagte (the Great Dutch Idea).

SASNEV, the Dutch Library and the Dutch Market, have become a cultural beacon in Pinelands and Cape town, and not only would it rob the crowd of what it represents, but it would violate the last will and testament of Willem de Zwijger, who’s vision was to give expression to the ideal of uniting all speakers of Dutch under one symbolic banner, regardless of political and geographical borders.

The Urban Bistro and SASNEV are out to preserve our food heritage with a bi-monthly Belgo/Dutch market where we want to bring you the food that made our childhoods.

Today the Huis der Nederlanden (literally, House of the Netherlands) – now the SASNEV building – is the robust pivot point of the expression and dissemination of Dutch culture in South Africa in the broadest sense of the word.

We encourage everyone who signs the petition to send an email to the City of Cape Town with their objections & reasons for objecting. The email address for Objections and Complaints is:
