Murray Tocker started this petition to City of Cape Town

Currently, the City of Cape town taxes Estate Agents by means of a permit required for Show House Pointer boards. Agents are required to pay a tax of between R1600 and R2000 annually for the the privilege of erecting these boards. There is a further tax/fine of R1480.00 per board if erected without said permit or if the board is erected in contravention of the by laws for outdoor advertising.

Each agent is only provided 6 permits, meaning only 6 boards may be erected per agent including the board outside the subject property. This discriminates against the active agents who often have 3 - 5 showhouses on any given Sunday. It is an impairment to the Constitutionally enshrined right to earn a living.

We call on the City of Cape Town to

  • eliminate the tax for permits and only fine agents who disregard the regulations AND
  • increase the permit allocation to 12 permits per agent.
