Connor Allen started this petition to City of Cambridge and

The Preston Springs Hotel, silently watching over Preston for as long as everyone remembers. Some thought it should be used. Others thought it had to come down. The majestic hotel was the largest remnant of our being put on the map. Now in 2020, its been razed for more condos.

The way this played out, there was nothing good, transparent, straightforward or honorable by the City. Emergency Demolition Order on Christmas Eve. The City had a process to follow and from all we can see currently, that process was thrown out by the officials. After watching that wondrous piece of architecture come down, it seems even many people who wanted it to come down now realize that Preston will NEVER be the same without it.

Had the City slowed their roll and not flexed their muscles seeming illegally like this, how our town was put on the map would be here to see and its totally possible that a use for The Preston springs could have come up. But, now the corner of King and Fountain is bare, and all I am is disgusted. The hotel deserved more. If it was to come down, it should have had a proper salvage operation, as the stairs were inside, all the wood trim around the building, the horror of the demolition crew dropping the tower.

In the wake of this catastrophe, I and many others I have spoke to believe that this developer, should not profit off of a demolition by neglect like we all watched in front of our very eyes while being told it wasn't the case. I think this should be public land. A park perhaps utilizing the rare example of a sulfur spring that along with the hotel, put Preston on the map. Riverside park is close, yes but Riverside and The Preston Springs, 2 totally different things as riverside has no sulfur spring. The GRCA (Grand River Conservation Authority) regulate the slope for erosion at the back of the hotel and the spring is a ''watercourse'' of sorts. In the end, if the spring isnt protected, I dont understand how it could be significant enough to put a hotel of the caliber that Preston Springs was that uses said spring.

I hope this turns some heads and makes some people think about what they would like to see there, as judging from the expressions as the hotel was ripped apart, not too many were enjoying it. But a public park. We could all enjoy that. Lets not allow the hotel to be forgotten like its sister, The Kress.
