Harvard Square Deserves Great Design

HARVARD SQUARE IS AN ICONIC AND IMPORTANT CIVIC SPACE. WITH MORE THAN 12 MILLION PEOPLE VISITING YEARLY, IT IS A PART OF THE LOCAL AND GLOBAL IMAGINATION. UNFORTUNATELY TODAY WE HAVE A BIG PROBLEM.
Cambridge has formulated plans to re-design Harvard Square Kiosk and Plaza behind closed doors. They have chosen landscape architects and architects without community input and designs have escaped rigorous public and professional process. Critical updates, such as the entrance to the MBTA Harvard Square Station, are not included in the project's scope. The Harvard Square station is a rusted eyesore that needs good design to make it a vibrant part of the community. The City plans to squander $5 million of taxpayer money, yet their proposal doesn’t look much different than what is there now. What’s at stake is uncoordinated efforts and a mediocre outcome. Check out the images of their current, limited schemes.
HARVARD SQUARE KIOSK AND PLAZA DESERVES A FAIR AND OPEN PROCESS AND GREAT DESIGN.
We Petition the City of Cambridge to:
- Immediately open the process.
- Work with the Public, City Council and MBTA.
- Open the scope to include Kiosk Plaza, MBTA entrances.
- Select the designers through a fair, effective process as allowed by Law*, such as a Design Competition or Invited Designer Selection Process.
- We want to see DESIGN PLANS, not just words!
