Why this petition matters

Started by Mary Simpson

Unity Island sits in the Niagara River, one of the few spaces within the City of Buffalo with public waterfront access. A former landfill, the island is a place of refuge and inclusion for our neighbors, from new immigrants to attorneys, all who come to experience the Niagara River, one of the ecological wonders of the world which includes Niagara Falls and the first internationally globally significant IBA (Important Bird Area) recognized by organizations in both Canada and the U.S.

The Niagara River Corridor has been designated a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention, a global treaty supporting the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands and related waters.

On this island, on this corridor, in legally designated parkland area, is where the Buffalo Sewer Authority plans to plop 12,000 solar panels. A solar farm can be put anywhere. A waterfront parkland can't be moved.

Please ask the City of Buffalo Common Council to vote NO on this solar farm on our precious public waterfront. Please sign the petition!
