Name Garvey Dog Park for Jerry Cunningham

Steve Bickerton started this petition to City of Boston Parks Commission

As you may know, Garvey Park is receiving a $5+Million renovation. Part of that renovation is the creation of a dog park in the area between the rink parking lot and the rear of the Neponset Health Center. This is a new amenity that I, and a few others, successfully lobbied for during the design of the new park, and I'm happy it was supported by others including Councilor Baker, Rep Hunt, and the Mayor.

I am hoping to have this new dog park named for former youth sports coach Jerry Cunningham. Jerry died in late 2016 after a battle with cancer. I believe the naming is appropriate for many reasons (outlines in the attached letter). The Parks Commission handles all naming and while this is not controversial at all, they do require signatures from supporters. Obviously getting signatures is tough right now, so they recommend a change.org petition.

This will not change anything at the Garvey, no other names will change (The Holloran Basketball Court and O'Sullivan Roller Hockey Rink will remain just as they were). This is just something I'm trying to do in memory of a great guy who passed away too young but volunteered a lot of his time for many years.

If you open the link, it will take you 2 minutes to sign. I'd really appreciate if you would do it. I tried to target this email to people with connections to St Ann's, where the Cunninghams have been involved in Colorguard and CYO forever, and for anyone who was involved or had kinds involved in Dorchester Youth Hockey during the years that Jerry was a coach. If you didn't know Jerry, I'd kindly ask that you'd sign as a favor to me.

I have spoken to Erin, Jerry's daughter, about this to make sure the family was supportive, and they are.

I ask that you not post this to social media.

Thanks in advance
