Chapter 265 of the Blue Springs Municipal Code deals with the city's Fair Housing policy and is written as follows:
"The City Council of the City of Blue Springs hereby declares it to be the public policy of the City to eliminate discrimination and safeguard the right of any person to sell, purchase, lease, rent or obtain real property without regard to race, sex, color, national origin, ancestry, religion, religious affiliation, physical handicap and without regard to whether a family has children. This Chapter shall be deemed an exercise of the police powers of the City of Blue Springs, Missouri, for the protection of the public welfare, prosperity, health and peace of the people of Blue Springs, Missouri."
We request that the city amend Chapter 265 to include protections for sexual orientation and gender identify. The original ordinance was written over 25 years ago at a time when awareness of the need to protect these groups from discrimination was not nearly as elevated as it is today. We now know that members of the LGBTQ community can and have been the victims of discrimination all across the country. They can and have been evicted from their homes or prevented from buying property for no other reason than their sexual orientation. By amending this ordinance, the City of Blue Springs will join with over a dozen other Missouri cities that offer these protections. The city will also affirm that it is an inclusive, respectful place for everyone to live and work, and that we will denounce discrimination wherever it is found.
