Welcome Major League Soccer to Austin's Ladybird Lake

Three cheers for Major League Soccer's (MLS) possible move to our great city Austin, Texas.
Join me in petitioning our leaders at City Hall to vote in favor of the team's preferred location in downtown Austin. Imagine a walk-able, bike-able, urban stadium along the shores of Lady Bird Lake. Live further away? The proposed site is within a 30 min drive of most Austinites, with thousands of parking spots and proposed shuttles nearby. This area already hosts events much larger (at Zilker Park and Auditorium Shores) and can easily handle game day attendance estimated to be a fraction of larger events.
Let's welcome the Columbus Crew's relocation to Austin by supporting our City Council as they deliberate a land lease of Butler Shores Park with the owners of the Crew.
Why a city stadium? The environmental impact is lessened by placing a "gathering place" where the people already live. MLS prefers to locate teams in urban cores as apposed to suburbs so fans enjoy visiting their city for a game and meal, the entire experience. The days of driving long distances to huge parking lots with a stadium in the middle are, and should be, numbered.
Games are typically held in the evenings, so traffic should be minimized as opposed to day games.
The team has not asked for money from the City of Austin, just a spot to build a relatively small urban stadium (think House Park Field on N Lamar).
According to PARD, the Austin area boasts more than 300 parks totaling more than 29,000 acres. The proposed stadium will occupy roughly 10 acres and could possibly be used for additional civic uses...maybe high school matches.
This is our best hope for a tier one professional league of any kind, as Austin is not on the radar of any other major professional league expansion plans. Let's not let this slip away.
