As a student at UT Austin, living in general is expensive. However, the apartment I currently reside in has a complete unequal issue that I feel isn't right. Normally in apartment buildings, you would individually get charged for a water/sewer bill based on your own usage of appliances. However, in myself and my roommates case, we paid $60 in water last month, despite both being away half the time, spending more than an average 4 person family. How could this be? Well, at the building we live in, we are not paying individually for our utilities, but as a whole. Water usage is measured as a building and then divided among the number of people living here, and not by our independent usage. As you can see, this system leaves the charge completely out of out control, and with an unpredictable Water and sewage bill, living in West Campus has been very chaotic. This problem could be solved if a meter was put into every individual apartment, and the system switched to an individual basis and have patrons be charged for THEIR usage, not the entire buildings.
