The Austin Historical Landmark Commission has voted to demolish "Graffiti Park" and move it out by the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. They have promised a bigger location that is 30 minutes from downtown Austin. This group of individuals claim to "promote historic preservation activities in Austin." When in actuality they are destroying a landmark that draws people from around the state and even the country in some cases to downtown Austin. They think taking a few photos of Graffiti Park will capture what it represents before they tear it down. But how are you supposed to capture what something means to a city with pictures when it changes everyday? People come to paint, draw, and create on Castle Hill everyday but they also come for the view of the Austin skyline; and if you move Graffiti Park out by the airport it will no longer be 5 minutes away from downtown it will be 30. The new location may be popular at first but slowly less and less people will start going until it is no longer changing on a daily basis like it does on Baylor Street. Eventually Graffiti park will stop changing altogether if it is moved 30 minutes away from downtown. Let's not lose a piece of Austin to a committee.
