There is currently a southbound bike lane in Austin, Texas on Guadalupe St from 47th St until Nueces St. From Nueces St to 24th St, however, there is no bike lane, and bicyclists are forced to share or take an entire lane of traffic for half a mile before being able to access another bike lane.
The lack of a bike line not only impedes traffic by having slower bicycles mixed into motor vehicle traffic, but adds excess danger to bicyclists by forcing them to commute on the roadway. This portion of Guadalupe St is also one of the busiest for bike traffic, as many bicyclists from North or West Campus make their daily commutes along this road towards the UT campus or downtown.
Adding a bike lane to this portion of Guadalupe St will not only save bicyclists and drivers time on their commute, but could also save a bicyclist's life. In a city that claims to be one of the most bike-friendly cities in the country, it is necessary to add a bike lane on one of the most-used portions on a major North/South road in Austin.
