Problem

Play in early childhood development is extremely important. It allows children to have agency and build relationships among themselves. It provides a way for the imagination to flourish and helps them learn how to have independence and control over part of their life. However, the way the world has been built, children with disabilities are excluded from activities that cater to those with differing abilities. Adults often believe that all it takes to fulfill the role of being inclusive is placing children who need different things in the same room. However, this is not the case. We need to change our perspectives and realize that we should alter the environment to best fit their needs. Making parks accessible for children who need wheelchairs to move around is great, but how do we incorporate play into that accessibility?

Zilker is such an iconic place where people from all backgrounds can come and enjoy everything it has to offer. Unfortunately, wheelchair users can not share the same joy with able-bodied children. Building a playground that allows a child with a wheelchair to swing or use monkey bars would help them to experience not only the joy of social play, but the positive impacts on development that come with it.

Solution
