Let's Save our Filipino Farmers

The food that we eat from our everyday lives comes from the hard work of farmers. Rice is considered to be one of the most important staple food in the Philippines. It is what many farmers grow, but also what nearly all consumers eat, mostly in our economy with a lower income, hence an important intervention point for promotion of agricultural development and alleviation of poverty.

We should also understand our Filipino farmers, because based on the article news of GMA, which is published on 2018, trend of young generation of Filipinos are worrisome. Data from the Philippines Statistics Authority show that the number of rice farmers in the country went down from 2.6 million in 2010 to 2.2 million in 2015. Number of farmers are decreasing and decreasing as time pass by while the other ones whose left are getting older. So, this could be an economical problem for using the near future, where we have shortage of farmers which is not an ideal situation for an agricultural country like us.

It is true that the farmers have a large, hectares, and rich lands that could feed a whole nation, yet the laborers in it are very poor and most of them still couldn't afford to feed themselves...Yes, which is a SAD FACT about farmers.

They spend hours in the fields under the scorching heat or the sun and cold rains just to fulfill our appetites. The same goes with the saying 'bawat butil mahalaga', because farmers blood, tears and sweat are the reason why Filipinos stomach are full. Yet, are they valued in the society? Or are you the one whose criticizing them? Can we call ourselves an agricultural country if we ourselves can't support them?

Farmers have a big role in our daily lives, without them people will starve to death. But what we doesn't know is they are the ones who are starving, as a result of young generation don't have the interest in farming at all. They are voice less, so with this, can we at least help them. The purpose of this petition is to help our farmers be a top priority of the government, support them with  their needs, and give them enough significance since we an a agricultural sector.
